How long have you been in real estate?
4 ½ months
What made you want to pursue real estate as a career?
Freedom to work for myself, and the potential to make more money than the limited income I was receiving at my full-time job.
What was one of your greatest challenges as a new agent?
Getting leads. Also, building a business from the ground up is hard, and putting your name out there is hard when there are already a lot of agents in Madison.
What do you feel were some of your greatest accomplishments early on?
My upcoming homebuyer seminar targeted towards Black families is gaining a little traction. I want a safe space to discuss homeownership with my community and what the path to get there looks like.
What motivated you to apply for the RASCW Minority Scholarship?
Being a Black Realtor® in Madison I felt like I needed a little help, a little push. I was able to use the scholarship to help pay for my upcoming seminar as well as other marketing materials.
What did receiving the RASCW Minority Scholarship mean to you?
It meant an honor. I was happy to see that the committee recognized that, yes, I got into real estate to support myself and my family, but at the same time I also plan to support my community and be one of the reasons why Madison will see an increase in Black homeownership over the next five years.
What didn’t you have or know starting out that would have been helpful?
I didn’t know that I would have to constantly be talking and meeting different people all the time, and that this is essential in order to make contacts, which will therefore increase the number of potential clients I have access to.
What’s one piece of advice you’d give to a new REALTOR®?
Make sure you have enough savings to sustain your income during the first year, or keep your day job while you build your business.
How has being a member of RASCW benefited you?
It has benefited me a lot. I go onto the website to search for various pieces of information, and I plan to go to more events.
What has been most rewarding about being a REALTOR®?
Meeting so many people in the industry. I’ve met both new and seasoned Realtors®, lenders, etc., and they’ve all been so helpful and sharing of tips and tricks. There are friendly people who want to see others succeed and hopefully I can be that for someone starting out once I gain experience.
