How long have you been working in the real estate industry?
13 years
How did you get into real estate?
After graduating college, I embarked on my career journey by starting as a receptionist at a bank, initially taking a role that wasn’t directly aligned with my field of study due to job market constraints. Despite the initial mismatch, this position provided me with valuable exposure to the banking environment, and through dedication and a willingness to learn, I advanced through various roles within the mortgage group, each position allowing me to develop a deeper understanding of the industry. My transition to UW Credit Union, as a processor was a pivotal moment, enabling me to hone my technical skills in mortgage processing. Over time, my accumulated experience and expertise led me to my current role as a loan officer. This role integrates all the knowledge I’ve gained throughout my career, allowing me to effectively assist clients in securing their mortgages while reflecting my growth and commitment to the industry.
What was one of your greatest challenges starting out?
One of my greatest challenges was navigating the complexity of member interactions and managing their expectations, while simultaneously handling the detailed intricacies of the loan process. Early on, I faced difficulties balancing the need for clear, empathetic communication with the technical demands of underwriting and processing. To address this, I invested time in comprehensive training to deepen my understanding of the mortgage products and processes, while also developing my communication skills through workshops and mentorship. By actively seeking feedback from more experienced colleagues and focusing on building strong, trust-based relationships with members, I was able to better manage their concerns and streamline the process.
What advice did you find most helpful when starting out in the industry?
Having a mentor who was deeply engaged in the community significantly enhanced my ability to build and strengthen local relationships. Their active involvement provided me with valuable networking opportunities and insights into the community’s needs and preferences, which in turn helped me connect more effectively with clients and referral partners.
What do you enjoy most about working in real estate?
Working in real estate offers a unique blend of excitement and challenge. One of the most enjoyable aspects is the opportunity to help people find their dream homes or make strategic investments. It’s rewarding to be part of such a significant moment in their lives. The dynamic nature of the market keeps things interesting, with new trends, technologies, and properties constantly evolving. Plus, every transaction is different, so there’s always something new to learn and explore.
What is your proudest achievement or favorite memory in real estate?
One of my proudest achievements in real estate was guiding a first-time homebuyer into the perfect loan product that included down payment assistance after searching for a home for two years. This not only made their home purchase possible but also ensured their monthly payments stayed within their budget. It was incredibly fulfilling to see them achieve their dream of homeownership without stretching their finances too thin. Being part of that journey and seeing their relief and excitement was truly a memorable experience.
What advice would you give to someone new to the industry, or someone considering real estate?
My advice would be to focus on building strong relationships and trust – real estate is as much about people as it is about properties. Understanding your clients’ needs, communicating effectively, and being genuinely supportive can set you apart. Invest time in learning the market, staying updated with industry trends, and honing your negotiation skills. Building a solid network and reputation early on can be incredibly valuable and lead to long-term success in the field.
