How did you get into real estate?
I started in banking in 1991, worked for several years in operations, and then transitioned into retail banking. After several years as a personal banker, I transferred to residential real estate lending.
What was one of your greatest challenges starting out?
The biggest challenge was that there is no official training program for becoming a mortgage lender, and you have to learn as you go. I worked with some fabulous lenders, and learned the most by watching them, picking their brains, and not being afraid to ask questions.
What advice did you find most helpful when starting out in the industry?
Be honest and transparent with clients and treat them like you would want to be treated.
What do you enjoy most about working in real estate?
I love meeting new people and helping them realize their dream of home ownership. I love what I do, and I will go above and beyond trying everything to make a transaction work for my clients.
What is your proudest achievement or favorite memory in real estate?
My favorite memories include the many lenders I’ve worked with over the years. Mortgage lenders are a special group of people, and I’m still friends with many of my past co-workers. We all only want to do what’s best for the client, and it helps to have others we can refer to if we are not able to handle a transaction.
What advice would you give to someone new to the industry, or someone considering real estate?
Stay positive and keep moving forward. Mortgage lending is all about planting seeds, and some seeds grow and bloom slower than others.
How has being a member of RASCW benefited you?
I just became a member again after several years of working from home. I’m looking forward to getting back out there and being involved.
How are you involved and making a difference in your community?
I live in Cottage Grove and am very involved with the Cottage Grove Chamber of Commerce. I currently serve on the Board as the President, and am the Chair of the golf committee. I volunteer in the community through Chamber events, as well as the Cottage Grove Home Talent Baseball team. I love getting to know my neighbors and participating in events that highlight our Cottage Grove community.
If you could have lunch with anyone in the world, alive or not, who would it be?
My grandmother, Dorothy. She passed in 2008, and I would love the opportunity to talk with her one more time.
Outside of work, what makes you happy?
My family and friends. My husband Scooter and I have a blended family of 5 children and 1 granddaughter, and we treasure our time together. We love hosting pool parties, golfing, playing Euchre, spending time up north, and cheering on the kids at sporting events.
